Kingdom of Belgium
Capital: Brussels
Languages: Dutch and French
National Flower: Red Poppy
Belgium's the cheerful one of the trio—the Netherlands and Luxembourg's sister, though "sister" might be generous given how strained things are with her brother. She's usually drawn with green eyes and wavy blonde shoulder-length hair, though some official art shows her with light brown instead. She barely appeared in the anime's first episode and showed up in an unaired special called "The Diary of the Awesome Me, Part 2."
Her relationship with the Netherlands is honestly pretty messy. Back when they were both living in Spain's house with young Romano, things fell apart—when the Netherlands declared independence, Belgium actually fought against him and stayed loyal to Spain. He tried making it work by proposing they unite into one country, but it didn't take. Their personalities are just too different. She's mature and friendly; he's cool and distant. Even now, fans notice the awkwardness between them hasn't really gone away.
Romano, when he was younger, had a massive crush on her. He was too shy to do anything about it, and when Belgium (feeling sorry for him) told him to kiss her, he froze completely.
Character-wise, she's kind, hardworking, and genuinely good-natured—the type who gets walked all over by her siblings and can't help poking her nose into everyone else's business. She's obsessed with good food and gets genuinely scary when angry. Her face is pretty distinctive, but her clothes are deliberately plain and unassuming, which is fitting since people tend to overlook her anyway, overshadowed by bigger neighbors. She's what you'd call a "tsukkomi"—basically the straight man in a comedy duo—and apparently speaks with a Shiga dialect.
The creator never officially settled on a human name for her, though he's mentioned considering "Anri," "Emma," "Laura," and "Manon." Since nothing's final, fans usually just call her "Alice" as a nod to Alice in Wonderland.
