Hypnos is basically the god of sleep and slumber—the personification of dozing off and everything that comes with it. He's the twin brother of Thanatos, who represents death and mortality, so you've got two sides of the same coin there. He answers to Hades, who rules over the Underworld, which makes Hypnos a fairly significant deity in his own right despite the subordinate role. Like his boss, he's got beef with Athena, the protector goddess of Earth—they're sworn enemies, though the exact reasons for that tension aren't always spelled out in detail.
