Among Shokugeki competitors, he's considered pretty weak—honestly one of the least intimidating students around, and like most people at the academy, he's intimidated by Erina. But Kanachi played a crucial role in Soma Yukihira's first big win: he coached Soma before his Shokugeki match against Mito Ikumi, the champion who'd previously beaten Kanachi for control of Don R's. He shared everything he knew about donburi dishes and Shokugeki strategy to help Soma pull off the upset.
He's not always the most competent guy, but there's something charismatic about him as a leader. His hair actually reacts to his emotions—it's kind of his tell when he's shocked or upset. When it comes to donburi, though, he's got serious knowledge across the whole range of dishes. That said, his influence took a hit once Erina started flexing the Elite Ten Council's authority around the academy.
