Goenitz is the final boss of The King of Fighters '96 and the leader of the Four Heavenly Kings of Orochi. His domain is wind itself—his full title translates to Goenitz of the Wildly-Blowing Wind.
From childhood, Goenitz knew exactly what he was meant to do: revive his god, Orochi. He became a traveling missionary, using his work as cover while he quietly orchestrated events toward that goal. When he was eighteen, he went after Rugal Bernstein. The fight wasn't close—Goenitz took out one of Rugal's eyes and then, seeing potential, infused him with a taste of Orochi's power to test whether he could serve as a suitable host. It didn't work out, so Goenitz handed off the job of watching Rugal to two other Hakkeshu members, Mature and Vice.
Things got darker from there. Goenitz tracked down a fellow Hakkeshu named Gaidel, only to find him living peacefully in a remote village with no interest in reviving Orochi. That wasn't acceptable. Goenitz activated the Riot of the Blood in Gaidel's daughter Leona, triggering a massacre that killed her parents and the entire village. He then sealed her memories of the incident. Still hunting for ways to accelerate Orochi's return, Goenitz realized the seal binding his god was too strong—so he went to the Yata household and murdered its head, Maki Kagura, to weaken it.
By the time the 1996 tournament rolled around, Goenitz had decided to hunt down the Three Sacred Treasures—the artifacts and bloodlines that had previously defeated Orochi. He'd already sized up Chizuru Kagura, and Mature and Vice were already tracking Iori Yagami. That left Kyo Kusanagi, the previous year's champion. Goenitz tested him and won decisively. But when the 1996 tournament finals came, all three heirs converged on him at once. Even with Orochi's power behind him, he couldn't handle the combined strength of Kyo, Iori, and Chizuru. Defeated and humiliated, Goenitz chose to end things himself rather than face further disgrace.
