Shiro is a Fighting-type trainer best known for his "Dojo Destroyer" reputation—he'd challenged and beaten 11 fighting dojos, collecting their plaques as trophies along the way. His whole thing was building up credibility so his future students would take him seriously.
He showed up at Kenzo's dojo with a specific goal: earn the title of Shihan and open his own Fighting gym back home. Kenzo was game for a battle, but his bad back forced him to back out. Rather than let the match go, he had his granddaughter Chigusa take Shiro on instead—though he wasn't thrilled about making her the next Shihan by default.
Chigusa trained with Ash before the match and managed to pull off the win using her Hitmontop, breaking Shiro's winning streak. True to form, Shiro handled the loss gracefully, even complimenting Kenzo's dojo and admitting he could see why it had such a stellar reputation.
