He's basically the definition of a guy having a rough go of things. Beyond just being naturally pessimistic, he's genuinely cursed—nothing works out for him, ever. As a college student, he's pretty much checked out entirely and couldn't be bothered to care about much of anything anymore.
Things start shifting when he stumbles into Every Mart and gets pulled into the orbit of the people who work there. They introduce him to fishing, and even though he's reluctant about the whole thing, he gradually gets on board. It's a slow thaw, but spending time with them and actually doing something with his time seems to pull him back from rock bottom.
