Katsura Yukiji teaches world history at Hakuō Academy, though her real job title might as well be "whatever keeps her paycheck intact." The 28-year-old is Hinagiku's older sister and works as a 24-hour gate guard—a combination that makes her notoriously paranoid about unauthorized people on campus. When Hayate first shows up, she refuses him entry flat-out, convinced that letting him through will cost her a salary deduction.
She thaws out after Hayate saves her from falling off the clock tower, though not enough to stop her from needlessly stressing him out during his entrance exam. By his first day at school, though, she's fully switched sides and goes around telling her entire class that he's basically the coolest person alive.
Yukiji's best known for being hilariously mercenary. She lives on campus specifically to dodge rent and funnel that money into alcohol instead. It's a running joke that she'll do almost anything for cash—she literally allowed an evil spirit to possess her just because it promised her a million yen. When rival teacher Makimura Shiori arrives at Hakuō, Yukiji gets bumped down to sub-homeroom teacher, though she bounces back to the main position once Makimura moves up the ladder.
Interestingly, she and Hinagiku were originally conceived in a one-shot manga where they were a high school student and her younger sister trying to pay off an 80 million yen debt. The author later developed this concept into what became Hayate no Gotoku!
