He joined HOMRA because he was drawn to the clan's strength and pride. However, he never actually got close to any of the core members—he mostly stuck around with other new recruits who were pretty rough around the edges. Without that inner circle influence, he ended up leaning heavily on HOMRA's reputation, acting arrogant and throwing the clan's name around.
