Ootsuka was a serious judo competitor back in the day, racking up wins at national tournaments and looking like she had everything going for her—great athleticism, solid prospects, the whole package. Then an injury derailed that entirely. She fell into a pretty dark place after having to quit, spending a lot of time dealing with depression. Things turned around when Amamiya brought her in to work together, which led her to become Amamiya's assistant.
