Ayane is Sawako's closest friend and arguably the most grounded person in their group. She's got a college boyfriend, multiple ear piercings, and generally carries herself with a maturity the others don't quite match yet. When the manga was first being developed, the creator originally designed Ayane and her friend Yoshida as a matching pair—they were nearly indistinguishable in the early chapters. After redrafting, Ayane got her signature look: longer, combed-out hair styled into something between a half-up and ponytail style.
There's a running joke about her middle school reputation (apparently she "played with more than 100 guys," according to the rumors), though she and Yoshida have basically become the year's social hierarchy in their current high school. What actually defines Ayane, though, is her perceptiveness. She's the type to give you just enough information to make you figure out the rest yourself, which both shows her intelligence and keeps people slightly off-balance. She's the one who realized Ume was spreading those rumors about Sawako, and she clocked that Sawako had feelings for Kazehaya way before anyone else put the pieces together.
She's normally composed and level-headed, but she's protective of Sawako to the point of being genuinely frightening when mad. If someone hurts her best friend—and Kazehaya catches flak for this more than once—Ayane doesn't hesitate to go after them with kicks and cutting remarks. Even Chizuru admits she finds Ayane scary when she's angry.
