K' has been the second main protagonist of the King of Fighters series since '99. He's a guy with no memories—the NESTS syndicate saw to that when they kidnapped him and spliced Kyo Kusanagi's DNA into his body, giving him the ability to copy Kyo's fire techniques. The whole thing left him wanting to prove he's his own person, not just a knockoff.
That drive to establish his own identity is what pushes him to go rogue against NESTS and take them down for what they did to him. He's not really into fighting tournaments in general, but he saw The King of Fighters competition as the perfect hunting ground—a way to track down NESTS operatives and eliminate them one by one. It was during this search that he crossed paths with Maxima, someone with the same vendetta. They ended up becoming partners and have stuck together since.
