Jason leads the Mad Dogs, a U.S. Army special forces unit, until a mission in the war-torn country of Penamstan goes catastrophically wrong. In 2000, his squad disobeys orders to hold position and instead rushes to rescue survivors from a downed U.S. special forces helicopter. They arrive to find the team already decimated, and during their escape, Jason and his men witness something disturbing—the supposedly dead soldiers moving in an erratic, unnatural way. The incident leaves a lasting mark on him.
Years later, Jason leaves active duty and enters federal service as an agent. By 2006, he's working alongside Leon Scott Kennedy under President Graham when a hacking breach compromises classified White House files. Jason is among four agents called in to investigate the security breach, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his career.
