Pete Pebbleman is a Trainer from Pewter City who showed up as a mid-tournament opponent during the Indigo Plateau Conference arc in Fire and Ice. He was the third challenger Ash faced at the conference, and their match happened to take place on the Ice Field.
Pete led with Cloyster, which gave Ash a genuinely tough fight. The strategy was straightforward but effective—Cloyster would use Withdraw to turtle up and outlast Ash's Kingler, while Kingler kept hammering away with Crabhammer. It was a battle of attrition, and eventually Kingler's persistence wore through Cloyster's defense.
For his second Pokémon, Pete sent out Arcanine. Despite being weak to Water moves, Arcanine made quick work of the tired Kingler by dodging its Bubble attacks and catching it with Dragon Rage. That's when Ash switched to Pikachu. The dynamic shifted as Pikachu used Agility to stay mobile, but Pete adapted by having Arcanine use Fire Blast to melt the Ice Field entirely—removing the solid ground Pikachu needed for its speed to matter. Pikachu turned the tables by diving into the resulting pool of water and blasting Arcanine with Thunderbolt. The electricity channeled through the melted ice and amplified, finishing Arcanine and ending Pete's tournament run.
