Egan is a Fire-type trainer who showed up in "Some Like it Hot" (EP242). He's basically the Fire-type equivalent of Misty—totally committed to catching and training only Pokémon of his preferred type. That's what drove his obsession with a massive Magcargo blocking the road to Blackthorn City. His first shot at battling it didn't go well, though.
Egan's impulsive nature and sarcastic attitude immediately put him at odds with Misty, and the two got into a heated argument about whether Fire-types or Water-types were superior. But after they grabbed lunch together and cooled off, they actually started getting along. With a second chance at the Magcargo, Egan took Misty's suggestion to heart and switched up his strategy, focusing on adaptability rather than just raw type advantage. It worked—he finally caught the thing. The two even teamed up later to take down Team Rocket with a combined Flamethrower and Water Gun.
