Itachi Uchiha is one of Naruto's most compelling characters—a missing-nin from the Leaf Village and a key member of Akatsuki, where he partners with Kisame. He's also Sasuke's older brother, a fact that defines much of the series' emotional core. Fans have consistently ranked him in Shonen Jump's top ten since he debuted, peaking at 5th place in the final poll.
Born into the prestigious Uchiha clan, Itachi was a prodigy by any measure. He witnessed the horrors of war at age four during the Third Great Shinobi World War, an experience that traumatized him and made him a pacifist—unusual for someone of his caliber. Despite this, his career progression was almost absurdly fast: top of his Academy class at seven after just one year, Sharingan mastery at eight, Chunin Exam promotion at ten, and ANBU Captain by thirteen. His father viewed him as the clan's future and largely neglected Sasuke as a result, though Itachi himself showed genuine affection for his younger brother and even pushed their father to pay attention to Sasuke's Academy enrollment.
What's striking about Itachi is how utterly composed he is. As an Akatsuki member, he maintains almost perfect emotional control, rarely showing surprise even when faced with stronger opponents. He's not arrogant—he respects capable fighters and doesn't exaggerate his own strength. Intelligence paired with that emotional discipline made him nearly impossible to catch off guard or deceive. Despite his lethal reputation, Itachi actually dislikes violence and violence and avoids combat when possible, preferring to end fights quickly. His loyalty lay entirely with Akatsuki's goals, and this single-minded focus earned him a notably better relationship with Kisame than most Akatsuki pairs enjoyed.
Physically, Itachi isn't as intimidating as you'd expect for someone so dangerous. He's tall and distinctly Uchiha—dark grey eyes, black hair framing his face with a long ponytail, and characteristic deep creases under his eyes. His skin has a slightly darker tone than Sasuke's, and his hair flows more softly without the spiky edge his brother favors. In Konoha, he wore simple black clothes with the Uchiha symbol on his back. As an Akatsuki member, he adopted the organization's signature cloak, revealing his old clothes underneath once it was destroyed during his fight with Sasuke.
Itachi's abilities are where he truly stands out. His genius manifested early and consistently—teachers noted he barely needed instruction. He's ranked among the series' strongest fighters, capable of taking down heavy hitters like Deidara, Orochimaru (twice), Kakashi, and Kurenai without much difficulty.
His Sharingan is exceptional even by Uchiha standards. He could cast genjutsu with just a look or pointing finger, instantly turn opponents' illusions back on them, and keep his eyes active constantly with barely any chakra drain.
His Mangekyo Sharingan pushes things further. His left eye grants Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu that traps victims in an illusionary world where seconds feel like days of torture. His right eye commands Amaterasu, black flames that burn through nearly anything, controllable by eye movement alone. His ultimate technique is Susanoo, a massive spectral warrior wielding the Totsuka Sword—a legendary blade that seals anything it pierces into a gourd—and the Yata Mirror, which reflects any attack. Zetsu himself called this combination invincible.
