Karura was the Fourth Kazekage's wife and mother to Gaara, Kankurō, and Temari. Her husband forced her into a horrifying situation: he had the One-Tailed beast Shukaku sealed into their unborn son against her will, using her own life force to complete the jutsu during Gaara's birth. The process killed her. With her dying breath, she cursed the village of Sunagakure, hoping that Gaara would one day avenge both her death and the trauma she'd endured.
