Because of this, she insists on being called Unko instead of using the proper reading of her name, Sadako—which, yeah, happens to sound like the Japanese word for feces. It's an amusing bit of self-awareness on her part. The irony is that her actual name, written with different kanji, means "Lucky Child," so there's a gap between what she's stuck with and what she chose.
