Kihara Nayuta is a character introduced in a Toaru Kagaku no Railgun mini-novel by Narita Ryogho, best known for his work on Baccano! and Durarara!!
Unlike her relative Therestina Kihara Lifeline, Nayuta actually underwent experiments designed with safety measures in place—which, ironically, made her family treat her like a disappointment. Being labeled a "flawed item" by her own relatives left a bitter mark on her.
Growing up isolated, she barely interacted with other kids, including Nunotaba Shinobu. Everything changed when she found her way into the Advanced Education Department and met Edasaki Banri and the other Child Errors under Kiyama Harumi's instruction. After a rough start, they became genuine friends. Together, they wanted to prove they weren't broken or defective—their goal was to join Judgment, protect Academy City, and reach Level 5 status.
Then the experiment happened. Her friends slipped into a coma, and Nayuta was convinced Kiyama was responsible. That betrayal, combined with her need for revenge and a somewhat naive belief that she could shield other kids from similar horrors by volunteering herself, led her to approach her grandfather Kihara Gensei about participation in experiments.
When Nayuta eventually learned the truth—that Kiyama had actually been trying to save the kids, and that Misaka Mikoto had stopped her—it shifted something in her. She became curious about Mikoto, wondering if she was someone worth admiring and wanting to test herself against her.
She's part of a special Advanced Education Department branch affiliated with Judgment.
