A mask-maker and swordsman trained in the Ittō-ryū style, he's best known for the dark secret he spent his life hiding from his son, Renzo—that he led the assault on Rin's mother years before. He first shows up in On Silent Wings part 1, where his past eventually catches up with him. Manji kills him in part 6, which sends Renzo into a rage. Manji plays dead to avoid the confrontation, and at his father's burial, Renzo pieces together the ugly truth when Rin cryptically suggests that some things are better left forgotten, that ignorance beats a lifetime of shame. The character appears throughout the On Silent Wings arc (parts I–VI).
