Mesprit is a small, gray fairy-type Pokémon with a distinctive look—two tails each tipped with red jewels, a partially magenta face, four long drooping appendages, and another red gem on its forehead.
It's one of the lake guardians, a legendary trio from the Sinnoh region alongside Uxie and Azelf. The trio occupies a special place in Pokémon lore: Mesprit is often called the "Being of Emotion" because it supposedly taught humans how to feel sorrow, joy, and pain. That said, it's also known for being playful and mischievous, and legend warns that touching it will drain your emotions entirely. Those who disrespect it face even worse—Mesprit will throw their feelings into complete chaos.
Mesprit has some wild abilities. Its spirit can leave its body and return at will without dying. It can teleport itself, other Pokémon, and humans, as shown in the anime's DP151 and DP152 episodes. It also plays a key role in creating Red Chains—either through gems extracted from its body or its plume—and can destroy them just as easily. Together with the other lake guardians, it's capable of calming down Dialga and Palkia if they're enraged, though not simultaneously.
In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Mesprit demonstrates the ability to speak human language through telepathy.
