Ayumu's a first-year high school student who joined the shogi club, mostly because of Urushi Yaotome. He's basically in love with her, but he's made this vow to himself: he won't confess until he beats her at shogi. Problem is, he never does. So yeah, that hasn't worked out great for him.
Back in middle school, he was actually in the kendo club and had a real knack for defensive tactics—breaking through opponents' guards. He was pretty respected for it. That same defensive strength carried over to shogi, which sounds solid on paper. But Urushi? She reads right through everything he does. His strategy just doesn't land against her.
