Hiashi Hyuga runs the Hyuga Clan with an iron fist. He's the father of Hinata and Hanabi, twin brother to the late Hizashi, and uncle to Neji—though his relationship with all three is deeply complicated by clan politics and his own rigid philosophy.
Born seconds before his twin, Hiashi inherited the role of clan head simply by winning a coin flip at birth, while Hizashi was locked into the branch family system. This accident of timing created lasting resentment between the brothers. Hizashi couldn't become leader no matter what he accomplished, and worse, he'd be branded with a curse seal to enforce his subordination. That kind of arbitrary cruelty ate at both of them.
Things came to a head when the Head Ninja of the Cloud Village kidnapped Hinata while posing as an ambassador in Konoha. Hiashi killed the kidnapper, but the Cloud demanded blood for blood—either his life or war. His brother stepped in and volunteered to die instead, insisting he wanted to choose his own fate for once, even if it meant leaving Neji orphaned. Before he went to his execution, Hizashi asked Hiashi to explain everything to Neji so the kid would understand it wasn't his father's weakness.
Hiashi is notoriously cold and demanding with his family. He works both daughters relentlessly during training and almost never praises them. With Hinata especially, he's brutal—he once told her new mentor Kurenai that he didn't care if Hinata died in service, since the clan had no use for someone weak. It's hard not to see how that kind of pressure shaped her.
