Ami is the daughter of Enzo Bron, CEO of the IT conglomerate Shake Hanz Corporation, and Yuko Enan, a Japanese woman. Her parents divorced amicably early in her childhood, with her mother gaining custody. When Ami was six, she was kidnapped along with other children by a criminal group running child exploitation operations. Her mother, devastated and falsely implicated in the tragedy by cruel rumors, took her own life.
Even as a young captive, Ami showed remarkable talent with computers and programming. She used a discarded machine to build games to cope with her imprisonment—work that eventually caught her captors' attention. Rather than free her, they exploited her skills, forcing her to develop programs for profit. Her most significant creation during this period was Marco Polo, a darkweb marketplace with its own payment infrastructure.
By age 14, Ami escaped and found refuge in the Twin Towers, a server facility. Years of isolation left her withdrawn and distrustful of the outside world; she preferred communicating through the internet using her own custom interface called "Underworld." That changed when Lupin III and his partners Jigen and Goemon tracked her down while investigating Marco Polo. Recognizing Lupin's reputation as a master thief, Ami struck a deal: help him steal from Marco Polo's administrators, and he'd steal her away from the Twin Towers.
The heist succeeded, but Marco Polo's operators wanted revenge. They put a bounty on Lupin's head, triggering an international manhunt involving Interpol, assassins, and crowdsourced tips from internet users. The danger terrified Ami at first, but gradually she found the chaos thrilling. More importantly, she discovered Lupin was genuinely protective and trustworthy—far beyond their original transaction. After Marco Polo fell to Lupin and Inspector Zenigata, Ami enrolled in a girls' boarding school to experience a normal life and build real friendships.
At school, her hacking habits initially made her an outsider, until Crown Princess Dolma Sinha of Padar arrived. The two quickly bonded over Dolma's unconventional personality. Their friendship was tested when the Whales of Liberation, a terrorist group, occupied the school. Ami was isolated in solitary confinement until Fujiko Mine—infiltrating the school to steal Dolma's national treasure, the Bloody Teardrop—freed her. Together they fought back against the terrorists with backup from Lupin's crew, who'd arrived independently. The victory was short-lived: an American Secret Service agent named McQuire abducted Dolma before they could fully secure her safety.
