Masato had a rough time in high school after his parents' divorce. He was angry at his father for bailing, calling him trash—which made sense given how hurt he was. His mom tried her best to be understanding, especially when he started getting into fights at school, but she didn't want him holding onto that kind of bitterness toward his dad. She blamed herself for not being able to help him through it, even though there was only so much she could've done.
