Sakura was sheltering with her grandfather in a bunker on Sadogashima when the BETA invaded Japan. The bunker collapsed under their assault, killing almost everyone inside—her grandfather included. She survived by hiding in a metal locker, completely unseen. When Komaki Sayoko was searching the island for survivors after the evacuation began, she found Sakura and got her onto a civilian transport ship with what remained of the military presence.
Years later, Sakura became a surface pilot for the UN military, eventually making 2nd Lieutenant. She was assigned to the Special Task Force A-01's 9th Squadron as part of A Flight.
