McKenzie showed up in "Doin' What Comes Natu-rally" as a trainer trying to work with his Natu, Naughty. When Ash's group first spotted him, he was so nervous he just bolted—but they'd run into him again pretty quickly at a local fair showcasing Pokémon talents.
McKenzie's dad wanted him and Naughty to do a fortune-telling act for Misty, which should've been straightforward. Instead, stage fright completely derailed the whole thing. Ash and the others felt bad enough to pitch in and help. Misty's advice was simple: wear a mask so the audience couldn't see his face. That seemed to work until Team Rocket crashed the fair and nabbed Naughty along with a bunch of other Pokémon.
Once McKenzie got Naughty back, he actually had to fight Jessie and her Arbok in front of a crowd—and surprisingly, the pressure didn't get to him this time. He had Naughty hit Arbok with Confuse Ray, which left the Pokémon too disoriented to do anything but chase Team Rocket around. Pikachu's Thunderbolt finished the job and sent them flying.
By the end of it, a schoolteacher asked McKenzie if he'd perform for some kids. He said yes, nailed the whole thing, and felt confident enough to finally ditch the mask.
