Magnus showed up in The Bonds of Evolution! as a character of the day, hailing from Brackish Town. He'd earned recognition as last year's best trainer from his hometown, which landed him a shot at an exhibition match against the Kalos Champion Diantha—basically a big deal.
He brought his Absol to the battle, but it was a quick loss. Gardevoir outclassed it completely, and Absol never managed to land a hit. After it was over, Magnus handled the defeat gracefully and shook hands with Diantha.
