Jirou's studying engineering at university when he runs into a girl named Naoko during a trip back to Tokyo. She's traveling with her maid, and they're both caught off guard when the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 hits and derails their train. Naoko's maid gets seriously hurt in the chaos—a broken leg—so Jirou steps up and gets them both to Naoko's family home. He leaves without ever telling them his name, which becomes the kind of meet-cute detail that matters later.
