Daniel Rand's father, Wendell Rand, had an unusual background. He came from K'un-Lun, a legendary city existing in another dimension, where he was born as the heir to Lord Tuan and would've taken the title of Yu-Ti—the August Personage in Jade. But his brother had other plans: he wanted the throne for himself and also happened to be in love with the same woman Wendell was. Wendell won out, chose to be with a woman named Shakirah, and they had a daughter together, Miranda. Eventually exiled by his ambitious brother, Wendell escaped to Earth, built a successful business career in the United States, and later married a woman named Heather. Daniel was their son.
By the time Daniel was born, his uncle had already claimed the title of Yu-Ti back in K'un-Lun after Tuan's death—meaning the dimensional throne stayed in the family, just not with the branch that settled on Earth.
