Marnie comes from money—her parents are well-off but rarely around. She's stuck at the Marsh House with a nanny and two maids who don't treat her particularly well. Most of her childhood is spent trying to escape them whenever she can, sneaking off to find some peace and freedom. That's when she meets Anna, and the two become close friends during these secret getaways. Their friendship becomes her real refuge from the cold atmosphere back at the house.
