Chin Gentsai is an elderly martial arts master living in the Chinese mountains who mentors Athena Asamiya, Sie Kensou, and Bao in harnessing their psychic abilities—what SNK calls Psycho Powers. He trains them relentlessly, using tournament participation as part of their spiritual development and preparation for impending threats. Early on, Chin worried that tournament fame would soften his students' resolve, but they eventually convinced him that competing in the wider world wouldn't compromise their training.
Things got complicated when a Dragon Spirit emerged between Kensou and Bao, weakening both fighters and leaving Chin suspicious about what caused it. He entered them in tournaments to help rebuild their strength, but ultimately decided in 2003 to pull the team out entirely so he could investigate the situation properly. That year, he brought K' and Maxima in to monitor tournament activity on his behalf while he focused intensively on retraining Kensou's psychic powers—which had mysteriously returned after vanishing in 2001.
During this period, Chin struck up an unlikely friendship with Kula Diamond over email and text. Kensou found this hilarious and immediately assumed it was a romance, much to Chin's apparent annoyance. Before KOF XIII, Chin asked Kula to compete alongside K' again, partly out of genuine curiosity to see how the young fighter would react to the request.
