Kouga leads the wolf demon tribe and is driven by a burning need to avenge his pack—they were killed by Kagura, who works for Naraku. He's cocky and loud-mouthed, but not stupid; he knows when to bail if a fight's going badly. Two shikon shards embedded in his legs give him serious speed and strength advantages.
He and InuYasha are constantly at each other's throats, though they'll back each other up if things get genuinely dangerous. Kouga's got a major thing for Kagome and makes no secret about it, which drives InuYasha crazy. Kagome, however, isn't interested—she's all about InuYasha. Over time, Kouga actually accepts this and eases off the romantic push. By the manga's endgame, he basically gives his blessing, telling Kagome that if InuYasha ever gets annoying, she knows where to find him.
His name, "Kouga," literally means "steel fang."
