People tend to read him as rude, arrogant, or cold, but that's mostly a defense mechanism. He's actually got pretty low self-esteem and genuinely cares about others; he just keeps people at arm's length because he's terrified his phobia will somehow hurt them. That fear became reality when his boss got injured in an accident that Shirotani felt responsible for, and the guilt hit hard. It took that traumatic experience plus Kurose Riku's intervention to push him toward actually addressing his mysophobia instead of just white-knuckling through life.
He's been doing exposure therapy now with Kurose's support. Kurose works as a counselor at Shimada Psychosomatics, so he's been helping Shirotani work through this step by step.
