Kayo Maruta is a supporting character and former vice-president of the student council at Aihara Academy. She's best known as Mitsuko's closest friend—the only person who can get away with calling her "Micchan" and speaking to her casually without consequences. Kayo stays by Mitsuko's side throughout much of the series, especially in the latter half.
When she first appears, Kayo comes across as stiff and formal with everyone else, including immediately calling out Yuzu for rule-breaking on her first day. She's a dedicated student council member obsessed with keeping order. Over time though, she softens up considerably, revealing a warmer side particularly around Mitsuko and the group that goes on the summer trip in volume 8. Her backstory and former council position are revealed in a volume 4 extra.
Appearance
Kayo's most recognizable feature is her dark brown bob cut and large D-shaped glasses, though she ditches the glasses starting in volume 10 and lets her hair grow out into a slightly longer, softer style. The anime takes some liberties with her design—giving her lighter black hair, oval-shaped clear glasses, and tapered bangs instead of her manga's flat rectangular ones. She's constantly seen holding her black handbook with her arms crossed.
Outfits
Beyond her standard school uniform with student council armband, she wears: a summer outfit with a striped boater hat and frilly dotted shorts (volume 8), a light button-up shirt (volume 9, her last appearance wearing glasses), and a casual striped shirt with denim jacket (volume 10 onward).
