Popp is a former weapons merchant's son who left his hometown of Rankaksu at 15 to train under the mage Avan. He's known mainly for his fire magic—Mera spells in particular—though he's expanded his arsenal considerably as the series goes on, picking up heavy hitters like Betan and the devastating Medoroa.
What fans often note about Popp is his character arc. He starts out pretty much a coward, bolting from danger whenever he can, but gradually toughens up and becomes genuinely formidable. It's one of the story's better redemption angles. He also develops feelings for Maam as things progress.
