Shougo Amakusa was born Shougo Muto, the nephew and disciple of Hyoue Nishida. After his parents were killed for their Christian faith, Shougo and his sister Sayo were taken by Hyoue to the continent, where Hyoue taught him the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu swordsmanship style.
The problem was that Hyoue wasn't actually qualified to teach it. He'd lost his position as successor to the style after failing to counter his own master's Kuzu Ryu Sen technique and supposedly drowning—though he somehow survived. Because of his own inadequate training, Shougo learned the style incorrectly and ended up misusing it catastrophically. When Hyoue finally realized what he'd done and tried to stop Shougo, things escalated: Shougo permanently blinded him using the Rai Ryu Sen, a technique Shougo invented himself and the only new addition to the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu since its creation centuries earlier.
After mastering the style, Shougo returned to Japan and took control of a secret Christian cult operating in Shimabara. He reinvented himself as Shougo Amakusa—adopting the name of a historical seventeenth-century Christian figure—and convinced his followers that he was the son of God. Using his sword skills, he hunted down government officials responsible for persecuting hidden Christians during the Shogunate era. For Shougo, it was personal vengeance for his parents' deaths and the Christians martyred during his childhood.
