Shigure is a demon surgeon and osteopath known for implanting Hiei's Jagan eye—a procedure that fundamentally changes Hiei's abilities and sets much of the story in motion. Rather than charge money for his work, Shigure deals in stranger currency: interesting stories, promises, favors. After the surgery, he takes Hiei on as a student, training him in swordsmanship while warning him that other demons will inevitably hunt him once word spreads about his new power and weakened state.
Before Hiei leaves, Shigure makes him swear never to reveal that Yukina is his sister—though Hiei had no intention of doing so anyway. Later, Shigure competes for a spot under Mukuro's command, facing off against Hiei himself for the 76th position. The fight doesn't go well for him; his head is literally split in two. Mukuro intervenes and saves his life, but Shigure's tournament luck doesn't improve—he eventually faces Kurama in the Makai tournament and loses that match too.
