America's best known for his energetic, almost hyperactive personality—he's cheerful, impulsive, and famously bad at reading the room. He's got blue eyes and short blonde hair, though the anime gave him a lighter brownish-blonde shade instead. That little ahoge sticking up on the right side of his head? That represents Nantucket. His glasses are meant to represent Texas, and despite wearing them, he doesn't actually need them.
He started out as the "New World," fought over by France, England, and Finland until England won out and raised him. The two had a brotherly bond that completely fell apart after the American Revolution, though they've since mellowed out. Now they bicker constantly and genuinely care about each other—England's honestly one of America's only real friends, even if neither would admit it easily.
Japan's another genuine friend of his. They hang out playing video games and watching movies together, collaborate on tech and cars, and America's genuinely into Japanese culture. He got way too excited seeing Tokyo Tower and a random neighborhood shrine. Meanwhile, Japan finds America's whole Western vibe baffling and has been caught photographing his "weirdly colored" cakes.
America and Canada are blood-brothers, though nobody knows who's older or if they're twins. The problem is America constantly forgets Canada exists, overshadows him, and shows zero interest—which drives Canada nuts internally, even though they manage an okay sibling relationship. Other countries like Cuba mix them up all the time because they look so similar.
He's nosy, impulsive, and can't read social cues, which annoys pretty much everyone except Japan and England. His interests run wild: archaeology, sports, sketching, gaming, making movies (especially horror ones), and stuffing his face with fast food. He's obsessed with heroes, justice, freedom, and diet trends. Weirdly, he's terrified of horror movies despite loving them, ghosts, and marmite. He also genuinely believes you can drive to any country in the world by car.
The guy's got inhuman strength—he once swung a buffalo around as a kid, stopped a car with his heel, and dragged England's Rolls Royce for an hour straight. England's notoriously terrible cooking actually trained America's stomach to handle some genuinely questionable-looking food.
That bomber jacket he wears has a "50" on the back in the manga (removed in the anime), representing the fifty states.
The "F." in his name possibly stands for Franklin, Foster, or—according to creator Hidekaz Himaruya—something less printable.
