Guru is one of the last surviving Namekians, having endured a devastating climate catastrophe on Namek several centuries before the main series. He shares this distinction with Kami and King Piccolo—who were originally a single being before Kami split off his evil half. What sets Guru apart is his role in essentially saving the entire Namekian race; after the climate shift wiped out most of his kind, he repopulated the species by laying eggs. Over his lifetime, he fathered 109 children, including his loyal bodyguard Nail and the younger Dende.
In the original Japanese version, he has no proper name and is simply called "The Eldest."
