Yuzuhiko is a second-year middle schooler who's basically the smart one in his family—he solves problems, thinks ahead, and has a brain that's way too developed for his age. He's noticeably sharper than his sister Mikan, though she doesn't always appreciate him pointing that out.
He's into video games and music, but his real passion is something he keeps completely under wraps: he's a devoted fan of the fictional idol Marumi Maruno. He collects everything—photos, magazines, keepsakes—but hides it all because he knows his family would tease him mercilessly, and his friends prefer other idols anyway. He's also weirdly particular about mayonnaise brands, which his penny-pinching mom doesn't always understand.
His mom dotes on him constantly, which he actually hates. He wants to be treated like an adult, not a kid, and definitely doesn't want to be called "Yuu-chan" anymore. At school, he's a solid student with good grades, though his teacher Miss Hara kind of intimidates him. He's popular and has a solid friend group.
His best friend is Fujino, who shares his love of books, games, and music—but Fujino acts like a complete goofball compared to Yuzuhiko's more straightforward personality. The problem is Fujino has a crush on Mikan, which horrifies Yuzuhiko enough that he once tried sabotaging it by telling Fujino all her worst traits. (That backfired spectacularly when Mikan caught and yelled at him.) His other friends include the shy Nasuo Arai, who used to be into Marumi Maruno too; Sudou, a popular girl who befriends basically everyone; and Yuri Ishida, whose weird appearance and quirky personality somehow repel most people but weirdly attract Yuzuhiko, Fujino, and Sudou.
Then there's Sayu Kawashima, who founded an entire "Fan Club" dedicated to him. She's got it bad and's always cooking up schemes to get his attention, only to have Yuri Ishida keep accidentally sabotaging them (even though Ishida couldn't care less about Yuzuhiko). Kawashima sees Ishida as her romantic rival, and she gets flustered whenever Yuzuhiko accidentally "saves" her—catching her when she trips, that kind of thing. Her best friend Yamashita is in the fan club too and basically keeps Kawashima grounded when she gets too worked up.
There was this one time Yuzuhiko drew a terrible caricature of Kawashima, and she actually gave up on him over it. But after he apologized and explained he meant it to be cute, she was right back in it. The fan club calls him by the code name "Hibari-chan" (Little Skylark), which comes from a ridiculous chain of word associations starting with his actual name. They also call him Yuzupii.
