Shuu is the son of a daimyo from the Land of That, a neighboring country near the Land of Fire.
He first appears as a spectator at an eating contest alongside Princess Chiyo and her father, the daimyo of the Land of This. During the event, a samurai named Tatewaki drags Shuu away for kendo training. The sparring doesn't go well—Tatewaki's experience vastly outmatches Shuu's—until Chiyo intervenes and calls off the session. Later, Ino uses her Mind Body Switch Technique to possess Shuu as part of a larger scheme.
Things get complicated when Naruto impersonates Shuu using the Transformation Technique, and Shikamaru delivers him a letter from his father warning of impending danger. Those warnings prove prescient: the Akatsuki launch an invasion of the Land of This, killing Chiyo's father in the process. Thanks to Naruto and Tatewaki's help, Shuu manages to escape with Chiyo, and the group eventually makes their way to the Land of That alongside Naruto and Team 10.
