Sukune was the kind of guy who refused to back down, no matter what it took to protect his village from Kandachi's threats. His death mirrors Kaiza's in a lot of ways—both men died doing what they thought was right for their people. His son Tanishi initially resented him for it, but eventually understood the sacrifice and came to respect him deeply. He was laid to rest in the village graveyard.
Jiraiya remembered Sukune and his family fondly from his first visit to Genjutsu Tree Village. Learning of Sukune's death hit him hard when he returned there later with Naruto. The guy clearly had the village's respect, even if he wasn't a trained ninja. As a civilian, he was capable enough in a fight, but nowhere near the level of actual shinobi.
He was married to Yone and had a son with her: Tanishi.
