Nanafushi came from the Valley Country and made his living as a ninja. When he heard about the joint Sand and Sound invasion of the Leaf Village, he saw an opportunity—a weakened village meant a chance to test its defenses and maybe exploit the chaos. He showed up in disguise, impersonating Guy, and somehow got roped into participating in Rock Lee's dojo challenge. That turned out poorly. Lee, despite his reputation as a scrappy underdog, absolutely destroyed him in combat, which forced Nanafushi to drop the act and reveal who he actually was.
