Her parents were both researchers involved with the mask project. When the catastrophic mask accident occurred, Tina's mother was pregnant and caught full exposure to lethal radiation. With her mother's life already lost, her father made a desperate call: he fused the mask directly into Tina's body in hopes of saving her life. Against all odds, it worked. She's the only person on record who can actually live with the mask integrated into her body without suffering the typical side effects that would kill anyone else.
