Prinz Eugen was an Admiral Hipper-class heavy cruiser built for Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II. Laid down in April 1936 and launched in August 1938, she entered service in August 1940 and served throughout the war. The ship was named after Prince Eugene of Savoy, an influential 18th-century general who served the Holy Roman Empire.
She packed serious firepower for her size—eight 20.3 cm guns as her main armament, with additional 10.5 cm twin guns mounted internally. Her rigging consisted of four twin 203mm SK C/34 cannons. Despite being nominally bound by the Anglo-German Naval Agreement's 10,000-ton limit, Prinz Eugen actually displaced over 16,000 tons. Her hull and deck were heavily armored, giving her solid protection for a heavy cruiser of her era.
