The thing is, once he realizes someone's played him, he gets sulky about it (and will literally sit under an umbrella to mope). But his memory's short; he bounces back and starts believing again pretty quick.
His gullibility's a double-edged sword. On one hand, it gets him into trouble and causes random mishaps. On the other hand, fans often note that his trusting nature and the weird situations it lands him in actually end up being crucial to cracking cases. His childishness means he gets swept up in other people's stories way too easily, but somehow that works out.
