Yamato Kansuke is a police inspector from Nagano Prefecture, best known for his serious, hard-boiled demeanor and the distinctive X-shaped scar where his left eye used to be. He lost the eye—along with permanent damage to his left leg—in a mountain avalanche while chasing a lead on a case. He now relies on a forearm crutch to get around.
Growing up in a small Nagano village, Yamato and his schoolmate Uehara Yui both idolized the local police officer Kai Kuroto, whose mysterious death would later become an obsession for Yamato. About a year before the Fuurinkazan Case, that very pursuit led him into the mountains and the avalanche. He disappeared for days, presumed dead, until another childhood friend—police inspector Morofushi Taka'aki, known as Koumei—ignored orders to track down the criminal and find him. After his recovery, Yamato threw himself back into his work, determined to solve Kai's death once and for all. He eventually succeeded with help from Conan and Heiji, and afterward, Uehara rejoined the force as his official partner.
Temperamentally, Yamato stands apart from the easygoing types like Megure and Yamamura. He's prone to being short-tempered, yelling at suspects and generally not suffering fools—which means he and Kogorou clash pretty regularly over the latter's cluelessness. That said, he's not totally cold. He's clearly aware of Uehara's feelings for him and accepts them quietly. He also happens to respect Conan's intellect and treats him like an actual equal rather than a kid, which is rare.
He's got an oddly competitive friendship with Koumei, constantly trying to one-up each other on cases. But they're genuinely close—close enough that Yamato once ran into a burning building without hesitation to save him.
