Kokonoe Yakumo is a master ninjutsu instructor best known for training Shiba Tatsuya, the series protagonist. He runs what amounts to a temple with a crew of warrior monks dedicated to rigorous training, and he's widely respected as one of the foremost experts on Ancient Magic in the entire setting.
Technically qualified to be a monk, Yakumo insists on calling himself a shinobi instead—a contradiction Tatsuya finds amusing enough to call him out on. Beyond ninjutsu, he's a legitimate martial arts master with enough skill to have earned serious respect in fighting circles. He also served in the JSDF at some point, rounding out his credentials as someone who knows combat in basically every form.
His dojo has produced several notable students. Besides Tatsuya, Ono Haruka and Kazama Harunobu trained under him, and Shiba Miyuki received instruction from him too. Given his deep knowledge of Ancient Magic, Yakumo maintains close ties with the Fujibayashi family, another lineage of ancient magic practitioners. First Lieutenant Fujibayashi Kyouko knows him personally and likely trained under him as well.
