Madara Uchiha was a legendary ninja and one of Konohagakure's founders, though his legacy is far more complicated than that title suggests.
Growing up, Madara and his younger brother Izuna were the Uchiha clan's most talented members by far. Even for an Uchiha, Madara's natural chakra was on another level entirely. The two brothers constantly pushed each other to improve, and through that relentless competition, both awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan. With that power in hand, they took over the clan—Madara as its leader—and basically conquered everything around them. But all those battles took their toll. Madara's repeated use of the Mangekyō left him going blind, so he did what he felt he had to: he took Izuna's eyes and gained an "eternal" Mangekyō Sharingan, keeping the clan dominant.
For years, the Uchiha and the Senju clan were locked in constant conflict, making Madara and Senju leader Hashirama bitter enemies. Eventually Hashirama proposed peace. Madara wanted no part of it, but his own clan was exhausted and voted to accept. So the Uchiha, the Senju, and the clans they'd conquered joined forces and founded Konoha.
Things fell apart quickly. When the village chose Hashirama as the first Hokage, Madara saw it as a betrayal. He tried to build support to challenge him, but the Uchiha clan wouldn't back him—they thought he just wanted to start the wars all over again. Isolated and angry, Madara abandoned the village entirely.
He eventually found the Nine-Tails and tried to use it against Hashirama in a final confrontation at what's now called the Valley of the End. Despite having a tailed beast on his side, Madara lost. Hashirama took control of the Nine-Tails from him, and Madara died in the battle.
