During the Chunin Exam, Shigure's team ran into Gaara's squad, which turned out to be a bad matchup. After deciding their opponents' scroll was worth the risk, Shigure underestimated just how strong Gaara was. He tried his sprinking needle technique, but Gaara's sand defense shut that down immediately. Gaara then trapped Shigure and his entire team using the Desert Coffin technique, ending the fight decisively.
